Open Agility Sessions (equipment & obstacles)
On Saturdays, a 2 hour session from 1 - 3 PM, you can come work your dog and practice the agility equipment in an open setting. Dogs familiar with the agility equipment are welcome and encouraged to attend. For dogs which are not K9 JYM students, we require a small evaluation to insure your dog’s safety and control using the agility pieces. We provide space to set up crates if you wish to bring multiple dogs, use the lounge when you need a break. Watch some TV, or watch the action in the ring thru the observation windows! A staff member is present to assist with training.
Times & Rates Why Do We Evaluate? Evaluation is done to insure your dog's safety around other dogs and people. Agility is team work between you and your dog. Without your dog's focus on you, excitement can go over the top, putting other handlers and their dogs at risk. It is important to keep your safe on the agility equipment. In our excitement to see our dogs try something new, it is possible to push them too fast, expect too much. With any athlete, training and conditioning avoids injury, this is just as true for your dog! Jumping too high, a single misstep off the Dogwalk, Teeter, or A-Frame can inujre your dog physically AND set your training back months in the early stages. Trust is very important. Once shaken, it will take time to build it back again, depending on your dog's overall confidence. The key to building teamwork is ALWAYS set your dog up to succeed. We do this by working in small steps toward the final goal - whether its running flyball, or full agility course, retrieving a frisbee/ball, or walking with you on a loose leash. If your dog has not yet developed the focus to remain with you off-lead, we require that you work on-lead in open gym settings. A staff member is available to assist with training. |
